Community Organizer

Job Description

August 1st 2022 - August 1st 2023  

SOMA Action is seeking a part time organizer to join our all-volunteer team to maximize our efforts for meaningful, lasting progressive change in our community, state and country.  

Overall Goal

Provide assistance as needed to maximize the growth and effectiveness of SOMA Action’s seven committees and GOTV efforts  

Fundraising

  • Work with Treasurer and President to run fundraising reports and manage donor data in Aplos

  • Oversee the donation acknowledgement process

  • Provide event coordination support for October fundraiser and other events as needed; liaise with vendors, track RSVPs, provide day of support

  • Conceptualize new fundraising appeals and campaigns

  • Work with communications team to share appeals, requests, and invitations through eblasts and social media 

Membership

  • In partnership with Membership Chair, ensure SOMA Action’s membership is consistently growing and that existing members are active and engaged, including conceptualizing new opportunities for recruitment 

  • Coordinate renewal outreach to members 

  • Serve as main point of contact for members 

Communications

  • Create and maintain an editorial calendar 

  • Work closely with the communications team to coordinate organizational wide communications, ensuring eblasts, blog posts and social media content are consistent and driving our mission forward

  • Liaise with communications and PR team to ensure SOMA Action’s work is covered and shared with the community 

  • Serve as main point of contact for new and existing members

  • Maintain accurate database of all organizational contacts, including elected officials 

  • Spearhead the collection of content for annual report 

Committees 

  • In partnership with the Chair of Chairs, work with Chairs of seven committees (Education, Racial Justice, Climate Justice, Religious Justice, Committee to End Gun Violence, Reproductive Justice, Democracy Action Committee) to ensure that all committees are driving SOMA Action’s mission forward, successful in reaching their goals, and effectively matching volunteers with actions 

  • Provide administrative and event support to Committee chairs as needed

Democracy Strikes Back (GOTV)

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for new volunteers and any members wanting more information about DSB

  • Help organize for in-person events, including letter-writing parties, phone banks and all-day canvassing trips 

  • Provide administrative and event support to DSB leadership and teams as needed

Other

  • Provide administrative support to Executive Committee, Committee chairs,  Treasurer and Membership Chair as needed 

  • Attend events to represent SOMA Action in New Jersey and DC

Logistics

  • Organizer will be paid via 1099.

  • Rate is $25/hr. 

  • Target is 15 hours week through December 1st, and then 10 hours a week thereafter. Any additional hours (over 15) will need approval from SOMA Action Executive Committee. 

  • Organizer will need to be available on weeknights and weekends. 

  •  Hours are flexible, though work is deadline driven. 

  • At the end of each week, Organizer will prepare summary of prior week’s work (hours spent per project) along with plan for the week ahead.

    • This document will be reviewed at a weekly 15-minute meeting.

    • Jessica James, SOMA Action President, will serve as point person when needed for direction. Once priorities  are established, Organizer will work directly with responsible parties (committee chairs, EC members etc)
