You Can Help!

SOMA Action was formed in reaction to Trump’s election. With Trump now out of office, SOMA Action has completely relaxed because the country is now perfect and we don’t need to be doing anything more to advance the progressive causes that will make the world more just and equitable. Right? Hell, no!

SOMA Action runs on the fuel of its committees – committees put the “action” in SOMA Action.

Right now, its committees are actively engaged in an incredible array of initiatives to fight for a better world. Here’s a sampling:

Cannabis Equity Initiative

  • Advocating for a racially just cannabis industry in SOMA

  • Advocating for black-owned businesses

The Climate Committee

  • Rallying members to take Empower NJ actions that will accelerate cuts in greenhouse emissions in our state

  • Mobilizing to save the South Mountain Reservation

  • Enabling a Quiet Maplewood (and South Orange) by advocating for a ban on gas-powered leaf-blowers

  • Joining the campaign to make the Oil & Gas industry pay for the damages they knowingly caused

  • Recruiting activists to sign the Westfield 20/20 Climate Commitment to adopt greener practices

 The Democracy Action Committee

  • Campaigning for DC Statehood

  • Pressuring the Senate to pass the For the People Act to stop GOP voter suppression measures in state legislatures.

  • Holding corporations accountable for their promise to stand against GOP elected officials who supported the Jan. 6 insurrection and support voter suppression efforts.

  • Lobbying for filibuster Reform

 The Immigrant Rights Committee

  • Working on the exit of ICE contracts

The Racial Justice Committee

  • Studying the history of, and promoting Black/Asian Solidarity

  • A White Supremacist Culture/Micro Aggressions program for Fall 2021

  • A Critical Race Theory program for Fall 2021

  • Working to establish Cannabis Equity

  • Supporting "Make us Visible NJ" -  Asian American Curriculum in K-12

The Religious Justice Committee

  • Standing up to anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and other instances of religious intolerance

  • Exposing religious injustice and sharing tools to combat it

  • Creating an understanding of anti-Semitism and racism as central to white nationalism

  • Hosting programs and community gatherings to support local religious minorities during times of crisis

The Voter Rights Committee

  • Getting the right voting equipment in the right places to ensure free and fair elections

  • Get Out The Vote initiatives in November

  • Following up with Essex County election officials to review the difficulties encountered in the June 8th election.

It’s a lot! See anything that interests you? I know you do!

Working on a SOMA Action committee is

  • SIMPLE

It’s easy. And you’ll never be asked to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, or that you aren’t ready to do.

  • FUN

We work as a community who care about each other, and want to enjoy our work.

  • EFFECTIVE

    Our actions make a difference.

If you are interested in helping any of these committees fight for a better world in any way whatsoever, simply email Jeremy at  jdobrish@mac.com and he will hook you up!
