SOMA Actions: Week of January 11

Condemn the anti-democratic Insurrection on January 6th at the US Capitol

SOMA Action unequivocally condemns the insurrection and seditious & violent actions of Pro-Trump supporters on January 6th, 2021. We also condemn every published lie and misinformation attempt by Trump supporters that culminated in the violent assault on our Capitol and elected lawmakers. This did not happen overnight - it was a long slide into an alternative reality for the MAGA supporters in D.C, aided and abetted by the President himself.

SOMA Action encourages all members to make their voices heard over the coming week by calling Federal and State elected officials to express our collective outrage on the events of January 6. We have summarized talking points below for reference.

  1. Congress should censure President Trump for his role in inciting the violence and insurrection on January 6.

  2. Call for the immediate removal of President Trump through the 25th Amendment or Impeachment process, if the Cabinet fails to act.

  3. The inequitable response of law enforcement to the largely white and male protestors compared with the Black Lives Matter protests over the summer cannot be overstated. Encourage all elected officials to call out the unfettered racism of the law enforcement response.

  4. Demand a thorough investigation into the failure of US Capitol Police, and any other agencies required to secure the safety of the building, and the elected representatives of the 117th Congress of the United States.

  5. Demand prosecution and appropriate punishment for the perpetrators, including those who incited the actions with their tweets or other public statements.

  6. Elected Representatives who attempted to overturn the Electoral College results should face consequences. SOMA Action signed a letter in support of Representative Cori Bush’s Resolution calling for an investigation into the actions of these members, and possible subsequent removal from office.
