The SOMA Action Immigration Committee
Contact: Cynthia Galeota Stan Varon Susan Vercheak
Our committee members support the immigrant community through the working groups below. We will continue to develop new initiatives as needed.
Advocacy
We are lobbying and advocating for the passage of the Immigrant Trust Act, a bill that is mired in the New Jersey Legislature. The current Attorney General has issued protective directives so that all citizens may avail themselves of state and local services without fear. We are keenly aware that elections can change policy, so it is critical to enshrine these directives into law.
Know Your Rights (KYR)
We are distributing crucial information in the form of Know Your Rights cards and flyers, business by business in local and neighboring towns. This information can help protect immigrants informing them of their Fourth and Fifth Amendments of the Bill of Rights and what to do if ICE approaches them.
Intersection of Our Local Governments and Immigrants
Building on the work of the first iteration of this committee, we are following up on the intent of South Orange, Maplewood and the local Board of Education’s implementation of sanctuary for immigrants.
